From WwwFred H. I'm a moderately knowledgeable user - I have no academic Unix background but have been playing with computers - mostly avocationally - for many years, First got my own computer in 1979 - 6502 based single board "Sym" ( Wikipedia article about SYM-1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SYM-1) ) . The Sym came with printed source code for it's 4K byte "monitor" (operating system in assembly language) and had numerous functions including I/O that were called via "vectors" (jump instructions in RAM that were initialized from ROM on reset. This made the Sym quite extensible. I got the Forth programming language (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forth_%28programming_language%29) running on the SYM(and most computers since). I mostly used the Forth Interest Group (FIG) and "F83" versions of Forth which both had source (Assembly Language and Forth ) code available before the Open Source movement came along. I've used since but done little Forth programming since using Linux :) Since 1992 I've managed the Cohousing-L listserv (http://cohousing.org/cohousing-L) I've broadened that effort to other lists and call it Communications for Justice (http://justcomm.org) which provides free, superior listserv's w/o ads to qualified groups using open source Mailman listserv with much superior searchable Mhonarc archives. My Link Page: fholson.cohousing.org (http://fholson.cohousing.org) I currently (Feb 2010) use Ubuntu 8.10 version of Linux tho I found a way to keep Ubuntu 6.06 running in a seperate partition with pretty much the same home partition shared between them (my data files are in subdirectories of my 'home' partition and the small real home directory mostly has just symbolic directory links the the subdirectories in the partition.)
