    S.M.A.R.T. is implemented by most (all ?) drive manufactures.  Some motherboards do enable and check this info also to be able to warn the users of possible disk failure.


    Some drive have additional information gathered by the S.M.A.R.T. firmware.  So the info gathered, relative use and accuracy varies by manufacture, drive, and model.
