With modern disk drives info is gather and stored about the status of the disk.  The system that monitors the disk and track this info is called "S.M.A.R.T.", which stands for "Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology"


Note, all examples are from Ubuntu (either 6.06 or 7.04) unless explicitly stated otherwise.
